Tom was born and raised in North Mississippi, receiving a degree from the University of Mississippi. He and his family have lived in Hendersonville, North Carolina since 1988. Tom has had short stories and poems published in a number of literary journals across the nation. A short story of his appears in Echoes Across the Blue Ridge, and anthology published by NetWest. His story, “The Wart Charmer” won the gold at the 2012 North Carolina Silver Arts Competition. Tom is a charter member of the Appalachian Round Table.

Tom taught a creative writing course entitled, “Hooks, Handles, and Men with Funny Hats,” through the Blue Ridge Community College continuing education program from 2010 to 2012. For the last ten years, he has served as facilitator of the Blue Ridge Writers’ Group, which meets on the first and third Mondays at the Henderson County Parks and Recreation Center, 708 S Grove St, Hendersonville,

He also presents regularly at the Henderson County Library’s Open Mic night (third Mondays from 5:30 to 7:30). This program is sponsored by the North Carolina Writers’ Network.
